VICTRON ENERGY - SHU500050100 - Shunt 500A/50mV

The Shunt 500A/50mV is the current sensor of a Victron BMV battery monitor — a calibrated precision resistor, with no electronics of its own. It is the same shunt that is supplied with a new BMV, sold separately as a replacement part.

How it works

The shunt is fitted in the battery's negative lead, so every amp going into or out of the battery passes through it. At its rated current it develops a voltage drop of exactly 50 mV. The battery monitor measures that voltage and turns it into amps, amp-hours consumed, state of charge and time to go. The shunt has no power supply, no display and no communication of its own — it only produces the signal.

What you need alongside it

A shunt on its own is not a battery monitor. It works together with a BMV-700, BMV-702 or BMV-712 Smart head unit, which holds the display and the electronics and connects to the shunt over the supplied RJ12 cable. The small circuit board that makes that connection is screwed onto the shunt with two M4 screws and is available separately as a spare part.

Not for the SmartShunt

The SmartShunt is a sealed unit with the shunt and the measuring electronics in one housing. Victron does not document fitting a different shunt to it, so this part is meant for BMV monitors. If you are looking for a battery monitor that works on its own, you want a SmartShunt or a BMV, not a bare shunt.
