VICTRON ENERGY - SHU202050200 - Shunt 2000A/50mV

The Shunt 2000A/50mV is the current sensor for a Victron BMV battery monitor in large DC installations — a calibrated precision resistor, with no electronics of its own. Four times the rating of the shunt supplied as standard.

How it works

The shunt is fitted in the battery's negative lead, so every amp going into or out of the battery passes through it. At its rated current it develops a voltage drop of exactly 50 mV. The battery monitor measures that voltage and turns it into amps, amp-hours consumed, state of charge and time to go. The shunt has no power supply, no display and no communication of its own — it only produces the signal.

Upgrading a BMV above 500 A

A BMV-700, BMV-702 or BMV-712 Smart is supplied with a 500 A / 50 mV shunt. If your system draws more than that, you fit this shunt instead — the monitor itself accepts shunts up to 9999 A and 75 mV.

The procedure is described in chapter 3.7 of the BMV manual: unscrew the circuit board from the original shunt, mount it on this one with good electrical contact, reconnect the cables, run the setup wizard and enter the new shunt current and shunt voltage in the monitor's menu. Finish with a zero-current calibration if the monitor still shows a reading with no load.

Not for the SmartShunt

The SmartShunt is a sealed unit with the shunt and the measuring electronics in one housing. Victron does not document fitting a different shunt to it, so this part is meant for BMV monitors. If you are looking for a battery monitor that works on its own, you want a SmartShunt or a BMV, not a bare shunt.
